I found this fantastically funny blog/site called ‘This Garden is Illegal’ and I totally dug it!  Not only is her title cute, but the sub-title is soooo true!

Anyway, on this site is a quiz you can take…and so I did and the results: See below.  It’s pretty darn dead on.  I am as shy as I am outgoing…if that makes any sense to anyone out there.  :-)

Are You?

You have a sunny disposition and are normally one of the first to show up for the party. You don’t need too much attention from the host once you get there as you are more than capable of making yourself seen and heard.

Fellow Bloggers:

www.GardenWeb.com now has a section of their site dedicated to Blogging.  It is called Garden Voices.

It takes all the day’s ‘clipping from around the web’ or blog entries of the day and lists them on one page. They have compiled a nice Blog Directory as well.

If you would like to have your Blog listed in the directory,  email the editor at:   gardenvoicesinquiries@mail.ivillage.com

Thought some of you might like to know this…  : -)   Everyone have a great and safe weekend.  I have weeds to pull, a sinus infection to cure and diapers to change ALL WEEKEND LONG.   Life is great!

Green and Red = So Pretty!(Click HERE to see a larger version of this picture.)

Our yard is full of them!  And no, they are not playing a friendly game of ‘Piggy Back’ (like we told B) but they are making Baby Laybugs!  This is good for our garden!  They are everywhere you look and most noticeably around our newly planted SunFlower House.  These Ladybugs varied in size and it seems they love to hang out in our weeds, especially the clover.  Today we collected around 15.

A few things I learned about Laybugs that I did NOT know:

  • They BITE!
  • The yellow stuff they release when disturbed is blood—EWW!  lol
  • They can be kept and used as needed when stored in a refrigerator.  They will live for about 1-10 weeks in a DORMANT state.
  • There are 450 species in North America alone.
  • They migrate and hibernate!!
  • They love fruit juice and 7Up when grumpy.
  • They eat raisins and aphids…lots of aphids…like up to 5,000 in a year.  About 35+ per day.
  • They live up to a year.
  • And if they fly away and you don’t want them to, spray their backs with a mix of soda and water. It suppose to ‘glue’ their wings shut for a few days.
What I DID know and love about them:
  • They love to eat aphids and other garden/flower pests.
  • They are gorgeous and most girls love them because they are ‘Boo-tiful’.
  • The male Ladybug is smaller than the female Ladybug.
Interesting little critters.  I love them. Always have and now we
will begin harvesting our own LadyBugs to use in our garden!   My daughter is all but too happy to help me collect the Ladies.   :-)

Rain: Good/Bad — Newbie feeling Blue as my Lillies. :-( May 7, 2008

Filed under: before — Casa Martin @ 7:00 am

As far as I am concerned the rain is Good–so Good!  No stressing about watering the plants, running the sprinkler for hours to get all the yard.

But the kids–they give the rain 4 ketchup covered thumbs DOWN.  Poor kiddos.  But mommy is creative and now our house is full of makeshift tents: quilts everywhere, chairs and tables in odd positions.  Radios blaring in all rooms, playing different genres (latin salsa, latin pop, country, jazz and Michael Buble) so we can dance when we feel like it, and maybe work out those wiggles that make my babies so fussy.  We are making it work!

It’s been difficult to sit in doors.  The hubby is traveling so we are more than bored!  BORED I TELL YA.  Our walks are not so fun if we can’t take the Dog and go out into the natural Trails that surround the house…the mud, the mud that will be flung on all  parts of me, the stroller and the kids.  I just don’t want to go on a  walk and spend 2 hours washing muddy clothes, shoes, dog, stroller and kids…ugh.  And this is also why I can’t go out and garden much either.  If a simple walk can and will cause such a mess then you can imagine us in newly turned ground—muddy from the rain, ready to be flung and dug into by 2 toddlers and a nutty dog.

So we sit inside and I have managed to learn a lot by reading some of the blogs I bookmarked.  But, I am overwhelmed and feeling ever so impatient about ALL I don’t know!  Ugh!  This, my friends, is new to me.  Feeling like I have no choice but to be patient, to learn day by day, by making MISTAKES aka killing a few plants.  I am a book worm, a nerd!  I breezed through school, college and beyond and even motherhood has been so natural…this, this so difficult for me.  I want to know more.  To not have so many questions…to have more time.  To know when and how and how much and how soon and when and what NOT to do.  Oh so many questions…so little time and even less knowledge…  ’Me sad and not happy.’

But on a more positive note, I offer this happy ending in pictures!  Always something happy to focus on, right?!  Right!

The Egg Laying Locust! May 1, 2008

Egg Laying Locust

Considering the damage these critters can and do cause, it was quit interesting to actually come across one in our yard,  doing a very natural thing in the insect world: laying it’s eggs.

BUT DID IT HAVE TO BE IN MY SUNFLOWER HOUSE?!?!?!

Darn thing was sitting there, unmoving, zoned out, taking care of it’s business when we walked up to water our casa de girasoles.  B probed it with a stick just a bit to see if it would hop away…it didn’t.  I probed it.  Nothing.  Dog came trotting towards us, almost killing it with a floppy paw, just missing it.  Nothing still.  We watered the area–it just sat there.  I took pictures of it and it glared at me–daring me to keep trying.

A few minutes later I tried again and this time I noticed it was ‘connected’ to the soil when I couldn’t over turn it in attempt to just move it so I wouldn’t have to look at it anymore.  And it hit me:  The Locust is laying it’s eggs. EWWW!

That’s all we need:  Just in case the flowers do survive the Texas heat, the dog’s paws as it chases a flying frisbee, tennis ball or bird, cat’s nibbling, the hungry rabbit that lives in our yard, or our yard people and their weed eaters,  these things will for sure do them in.

Anywho, 15 minutes later, the ‘big hopper’ (as B named it) was gone but I am sure those eggs are there…ready to hatch and eat my flowers so I am not sure what to do now.  Perhaps taking a huge shovel and digging up the small area it was in?

UGH!  Never a dull moment in the Gardens of Casa Martin!

It’s the end of my very favorite month, April, and my yard and gardens already look so different!!  I love this time of year…I just adore it; the colors and smells and wonderful, unpredictable weather.  I love being outside all day long with my babies and furry babies, learning, taking pictures, talking, collecting, laughing.  Gardening is addictive.  It’s refreshing.  It’s relaxing and always offers something good, like a flower, new bud, new growth–new joy on the faces of my babies who are 1 & 2 and find our new hobby ever more exciting than their mommy and daddy.  (we do all the dirty/hard work)
